Trainer Greg Eurell says Red Colossus is in great shape for his return in Saturday's Group Two Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

Eurell said there were many options for the Testa Rossa gelding who is nominated for both the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate.

Now a five-year-old, Red Colossus finished fourth to Miss Bindi in an 800m barrier trial at Cranbourne on August 8.

"He trialled well and he's in great shape," said Eurell who won the 2009 Memsie with Mic Mac while Apache Cat ran third to El Segundo in 2006.

"He only had two runs in the autumn and he was going well at the time so that gave us the opportunity to give him a break and see what he could do in the spring."

"His first couple of runs will be indicative of where we go with him."

As a three-year-old, the versatile Red Colossus won the Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and the Chairman's Stakes (2014m), both at Listed level at Morphettville before finishing runner-up to Kidnapped in the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m.

He raced well last spring without winning, placing over 1400 metres at Sandown, running second in the Bairnsdale Cup (1600m) and third in the Seymour Cup (1600m).

"Early last spring he missed a run and that threw him off beat which made it very difficult to get him where I wanted him to be," Eurell said.

"He ran fifth to So You Think in the Mackinnon Stakes but I have absolutely no doubt saying the horse is a better product than what he was 12 months ago.

"And he can handle wet and dry tracks."

Red Colossus won the Group Three Victoria Hcp (1400m) first-up in April this year and was spelled after finishing third to Budriguez in the R A Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville in May.

Chris Symons has ridden Red Colossus in all but one of his 18 starts and will again take the mount on Saturday.

Among the opposition will be dual Group One winner Shamrocker, VRC Oaks winner Brazilian Pulse, AJC Australian Oaks winner Absolutely and AAMI Vasewinner Redkindled Interest who galloped stylishly between races at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
