Brad Rawiller says there is no other horse he would rather be riding in the Melbourne Cup than last year's winner Viewed.

Rawiller has queried whether the Caulfield Cup winner has the brilliance at this stage of his campaign to win Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington but wouldn't be surprised if he gave trainer Bart Cummings his 11th victory in the traditional Cup lead-up.

"I am thinking it (his performance) would be more like his Turnbull run but he's really come on in leaps and bounds and you just never know," Rawiller said.

Viewed was beaten three lengths when a midfield seventh to Efficient in the Turnbull Stakes over the Mackinnon course two starts ago on October 3.

"It (the Mackinnon) is his last run going in to the Melbourne Cup so he is probably going to be a little bit dour ... but if they fly along he will be getting home strongly," Rawiller said.

Rawiller first rode Viewed three starts ago when he was second-up and finished 10th in the Group One Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.

He said he had always felt that he was on the horse to beat in the Melbourne Cup and his improvement from the Turnbull to the Caulfield Cup had only excited him more about his chances.

Rawiller said that in the Caulfield Cup Viewed showed he was exceptional with the way he was able to go from marking time behind a wall of horses on the home turn to dashing through a gap to win easily.

"Often mile and a half (2400m) horses struggle to get going again but that is how good a form he is in," Rawiller said.

"He just zipped through."

From limited opportunities Rawiller has been quick to make an impact in Australia's biggest races and was having just his second rides in both this year's Golden Slipper Stakes and Caulfield Cup when he won them.

Viewed will be his first Melbourne Cup ride.

Rawiller said he was approaching the Cup with a similar sense of occasion to when he was a "bush jockey" just before winning his first Group One race on Niconero in the 2006 Fruit `N' Veg Stakes in Perth.

"It is my first Melbourne Cup ride but I have seen plenty of them and certainly know what is needed," Rawiller said.

"I can't wait."

Cummings is the only trainer with a representative in this year's Mackinnon Stakes to have won the race before.

Other Melbourne Cup contenders in the Mackinnon are Danny O'Brien-trained stablemates Master O'Reilly and Vigor, dual Cox Plate placegetter Zipping, Newport and English stayer Cima De Triomphe.

Cima De Triomphe would give champion jockey Damien Oliver his fourth Mackinnon.
