A last-start provincial maiden winner has been left to carry the autumn torch for trainer Gary Portelli.

In the wake of Somepin Anypin being sent to the paddock after his unplaced Hobartville Stakes run, Rose Of Peace is the last horse standing in what Portelli says was always - numerically at least - a modest team of carnival prospects.

"Somepin Anypin and Rose Of Peace were my two main hopes but he has gone for a spell," Portelli said.

"He lost his back shoes and is sore in the feet so he had a bad day all round on Saturday."

Rose Of Peace will join a traditional path to the AJC Australian Oaks on Saturday when she lines up in the Surround Stakes after starting her campaign with an against-the-odds Hawkesbury maiden win.

She was a fringe stakes player in two Melbourne runs in the spring and Portelli said he was sure Rose Of Peace would be even more competitive at black-type level as she races deeper into the autumn.

"After she ran fourth in the Wakeful (Stakes) it was then decided to spell her straight away and bring her back for the Oaks in Sydney," he said.

"I thought she showed a lot of courage in Melbourne.

"She had no luck at Moonee Valley when all sorts of things went wrong then she backed up and ran well in the Wakeful."

Rose Of Peace overcame a rain-affected track to win her campaign return race at Hawkesbury.

"She wasn't fit and it wouldn't have worried me if she had been beaten because it was 1300 metres first-up on a heavy track," Portelli said.

Brenton Avdulla, who is in unstoppable form, has taken the mount in the Surround.

He has ridden Rose Of Peace once before when the filly ran unplaced in a midweek maiden.

Rose Of Peace was one of 11 entries received on Monday for the $200,000 race.

Nominations include Group One placegetter More Strawberries, brave in defeat when third after giving weight to her older rivals in the Triscay Stakes.

Light Fingers placegetters Red Tracer and Parables are also nominated.
