While a win by Something Anything in the Stradbroke Handicap would give Gary Portelli the ultimate prize this weekend, the June Stakes also holds special meaning for the Warwick Farm trainer.

Stable stalwart Marwin Gold won the winter feature sprint at Randwick in 2003 and Allervite will represent the trainer on Saturday.

Marwin Gold retired from the track as an 11-year-old after winning at Moe in October last year but has been far from idle.

He is now the lead pony at Portelli's Flemington stable which is run by the trainer's brother Troy.

"He was an old marvel and the sort of horse you love to have in the stable," Portelli said.

"He always managed to pick up a decent cheque each preparation and was just such a major part of our stable."

Allervite will be making a quantum leap from restricted company to the Listed race but the wet conditions have boosted Portelli's confidence the four-year-old can perform well.

"He really likes it wet," Portelli said.

"It's a big step up but he's in on the limit and it seems a very suitable race for him."

With many of Sydney's senior riders in Brisbane for the Stradbroke meeting, five apprentices will ride in the non-claiming race.

But even if a senior jockey had been available, Portelli was always going to put Nathan Berry on Allervite.

"He knows the horse very well and he has an excellent record on him," Portelli said.

"And he does what I tell him to do. That's a big help."

Berry has been aboard Allervite at his past two starts which have both resulted in wins at Canterbury over the 1100 metres of the June Stakes.

Kroner heads TAB Sportsbet markets at $3.60 with Allervite at $10 on Friday.

Berry will also ride the Portelli-trained Sacred Orders in the Vale Bruce McLachlan Handicap (1200m).

Among his other rides where he can utilise his two-kilogram claim is With A Chance in the TAB Jackpot Quaddie Welter (1800m).

Trained at Scone by Luke Griffith, seven-year-old With A Chance has been a winter wet track specialist over the past few years winning the PJ Bell Country Championship in 2006 and again last year.

He has paid the price with 60kg topweight in the welter.

With Berry's allowance he will carry half a kilo less than last-start Lord Mayor's Cup winner Penrickson.

Randwick was rated a heavy nine on Friday afternoon.
