Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready and the talented More Than Great are set to improve the record of three-year-olds in the Group Two Caulfield Sprint on Saturday.

In the history of the 1100m feature, which was first run in 1983, only two three-year-olds have managed to win - Campaign King in 1985 and Jet Spur in 2005.

Phelan Ready was being aimed at the Caulfield Guineas but Sunshine Coast trainer Jason McLachlan reverted to a sprinting campaign after the gelding was withdrawn at the barrier before the Guineas Prelude (1400m) when the club veterinarian believed he was a bit proppy.

McLachlan was distraught with that decision but was buoyant after the More Than Ready gelding bounced back with a slashing effort when runner-up to Danleigh in the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 25.

"Stathi (Katsidis) said he didn't handle the turn but in the straight he ran on really well," McLachlan said.

More Than Great is being brought back in distance by Rosehill trainer David Payne after his last-start third to Denman in a small field of five in the Group Two Stan Fox Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on September 26.

The colt, also by More Than Ready, hasn't been out of a place in six career starts yielding three wins including a nose victory over the highly-rated So You Think in the Listed Ming Dynasty Stakes (1400m) at Randwick two starts back.

Katsidis will ride Phelan Ready for the second time in a race on Saturday while Kerrin McEvoy takes the ride on More Than Great for the first time.

The Lee Freedman-trained First Command has been backed from $3.80 in to $3 favouritism to avenge his nose defeat by the fast-finishing All Silent in the Group Two Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 3.

The Commands four-year-old had won five straight before the Gilgai.
