Kevin Moses would love for No Wine No Song to finally get his chance to run in a Melbourne Cup but fears the veteran will miss out again.

The 2008 Sydney Cup winner has made a comeback to racing on more than one occasion and on Wednesday will have his first start outside his home state in the Group Three Geelong Cup (2406m).

The nine-year-old is currently 36th in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup (3200m) but victory at Geelong and a weight penalty could elevate him into the field.

No Wine No Song has raced in four Sydney Cups, including his 2008 triumph, but two tendon injuries, a bout of colic and also the equine influenza (EI) outbreak in 2007 has forced the gelding to miss the past three spring carnivals.

The stayer arrived in Melbourne last Friday to prepare for the Geelong Cup.

"He's a nine-year-old now, one year he had a tendon injury, another year there was EI and one year he had colic," Moses said.

"He's probably past his best now but it would still be nice to run (in the Melbourne Cup)."

Moses believes the number of international entries this year means the evergreen stayer will struggle to force his way into the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field.

"If I didn't have a runner I wouldn't worry but now I've got a runner I think there's too many (international runners)," Moses said.

"The thing with him is that he's won a Group One, he's placed in Group Ones, he's an Australian horse and he can't get a run."

Moses opted for Wednesday's race in preference to Saturday's Cathay Pacific Airways Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley.

Geelong was rated a slow (6) on Tuesday and the 56mm of rain at the track in the past week was of no concern to Moses.

"It helps him more than it helps others," the trainer said.

"His old legs get through it."

No Wine No Song won the Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) last month and then was third behind Herculian Prince and Mourayan in the Group One Metropolitan (2400m).

The Geelong Cup has emerged as a genuine Melbourne Cup guide in recent years with the Dermot Weld-trained Media Puzzle claiming the double in 2002.

She's Archie finished second in both races in 2003, On A Jeune won the Geelong Cup in 2005 before finishing second to Makybe Diva at Flemington and the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer won at Geelong in 2008 before his closest of seconds to Viewed in the Cup.

Last year's Melbourne Cup runner-up Crime Scene was unplaced at Geelong.

The Cairon Maher-trained Moudre, who is yet to pass the first qualifying clause for the Melbourne Cup, is the $4.20 Geelong Cup favourite.

The Cumani-trained Drunken Sailor is one of two internationals in the race and is out to emulate stablemate Bauer's win.

Drunken Sailor is 34th in the Melbourne Cup order and also needs to win and gain a penalty if he's to be assured of a start.
