Promising stayer Maluckyday could remain in contention to chase a Melbourne Cup start if he justifies odds-on favouritism at Randwick on Saturday.

Maluckyday will line up as one of the shortest-priced favourites at the meeting when he runs in the Listed City Tattersalls Club Cup (2400m).

The four-year-old opened at $1.85 on TAB Sportsbet's first markets.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes is adamant the staying prospect will be a much better horse this time next year but wouldn't rule out a trip south this preparation.

"We'll see how he races Saturday," Hawkes said.

Maluckyday is still among the 78 horses left in the Melbourne Cup after second declarations were taken last week.

However, he is yet to pass the first elimination clause and is well down the ballot order.

Maluckyday, a $151 Melbourne Cup chance, hasn't missed a place in his six starts which have included three victories as well as a Group Two placing in the Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in April.

He gave another glimpse of his potential under lights at Canterbury on September 24, posting a dominant five-length win in a 1900m restricted race.

"He won with a bit of authority but he's still learning," Hawkes said.

"He still did a couple of little things wrong, he's still green, and in 12 months time he's going to be a lot better."

Maluckyday is raced by Nick Moraitis, owner of champion Might And Power who won the 1997 Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup and returned to Melbourne a year later and took out the Cox Plate.

Team Hawkes will also be represented in the Tattersalls Cup by five-year-old mare Prix Du Sang.

Hawkes revealed the race was to be the mare's swansong.

"Whatever she does on Saturday - win, lose or draw - she's going back to New Zealand after this to go to stud," he said.

Prix Du Sang finished 10th in the Group One Metropolitan at her most recent start.

Just ahead of her in that race was the Kevin Moses-trained Get Up Jude who will carry topweight in Saturday's race.

Get Up Jude has 57kg in the seven-horse field after weights were raised 1.5kg at acceptance time on Thursday.
