Sydney cast-off Lucky Leak booked a Listed Weetwood Handicap start at Toowoomba next month following a determined victory at Doomben.

Lucky Leak, ridden by Chris Munce, showed a lot of grit after racing in a prominent position to hold off the challengers to score by a half-length over Changing Eyes in Saturday's AM Giles & Co Chartered Accountants Handicap (1350m).

Dalzar battled well to finish a further length away third.

Trainer Patrick Sexton missed the five-year-old's win but partner Sam Wickham again proved a lucky omen.

Sexton, who stayed at home to saddle up five runners at Toowoomba, wants to target the 1300-metre Weetwood on his home track with Lucky Leak before deciding whether the son of Iglesia is winter carnival material.

Wickham has been a lucky omen for the stable as she was also in charge when Lucky Leak won at Doomben at his previous start last month.

Sexton has been patient with the headstrong Lucky Leak, who was formerly trained by Gary Portelli in Sydney.

"He had a few mental problems when we first got him and we like to space his runs," Wickham said.

However, Sexton and part-owner Marty McInerney have between them managed to transform Lucky Leak.

Before coming to Queensland, McInerney spelled him at his property at Acacia outside Sydney and fed him while he stood in the barriers to teach him to relax.

Sexton missed claiming the Weetwood Handicap last year with Poor Judge was transferred to neighbour Norm Hilton after Sexton was disqualified for four months over a positive swab.

Earlier, Fantastic Blue continued his march towards the Brisbane winter carnival following his half-neck win over Racing Heart in the JTP Group Plate (2020m).

Fantastic Blue earned high praise from jockey Scott Galloway after storming home from near the tail of the field on the home turn.

Despite the win trainer Paul Nolan declared a Sydney trip off limits for the four-year-old who will remain at home to concentrate on the winter.

"Why take him away when he can beat them on our own dunghill," Nolan said.

"He was a long way back on the turn but I thought he'd still win if Scotty could get him into the clear."

Galloway has a big opinion of Fantastic Blue and compared him favourably to the Brian Smith-trained Hume who broke down after winning six times from 18 starts.

"He's not as good as Hume yet but he's headed in the same direction," Galloway said.

"I've ridden a lot of good horses over the years and he's got the makings of being a nice horse."
