A sunny, windy day on Friday has buoyed the spirits of trainer David Vandyke but Metropolitan fancy Lamasery is still not a certain starter in the staying feature.

Vandyke had planned to inspect the Randwick surface early on Saturday morning but feels that is no longer necessary due to Sydney's fine weather on Friday.

"I was going to (look at the track) but I don't think I'll need to now, you couldn't get a better drying day than today," Vandyke said.

The Warwick Farm trainer only has two horses in work and both are entered for Group Ones on Saturday, but Lamasery will only take his place if the track is rated a slow (6) or better.

Randwick was upgraded from a slow (7) to a slow (6) on Friday afternoon but rain is predicted for Saturday.

"Providing we don't get any early rain pre-7.30 in the morning we won't be scratching because I believe the track will be slow (6) at worst and maybe even a dead (5) by then," Vandyke said.

"I will ring the (Australian Turf) Club at 6.30 or 6.45 in the morning and if it's a slow six or better, which I believe it will be, he won't be scratched and then the only thing that's going to stop us is the predicted rain through the day."

The Metropolitan (2400m) is the final race on the nine-race program which also includes the Group One Epsom Handicap, Group One Flight Stakes and Group One Spring Champion Stakes.

"If we stay in in the morning but then we get a downgrade to a slow seven at any stage during the day he'll come out," Vandyke said.

Vandyke has next weekend's Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) or Cranbourne Cup (2025m) as back-up plans for the gelding who is among nominations for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this spring.

Lamasery, winner of the Kingston Town Stakes and Colin Stephen Quality at his past two starts, is on the second line of TAB Sportsbet's Metropolitan betting at $6 behind Trusting ($5).

"He's really come to hand in the last few days and I expect him to run really well tomorrow (if he races)," Vandyke said.

"I actually think he's in better shape now than before the Colin Stephen last weekend so I'm optimistic so long as he gets the right conditions."

Metropolitan favourite Trusting has returned to his best form at his past two starts, winning the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and Hill Stakes (2000m) at weight-for-age.

Trusting is likely to head towards the Caulfield Cup and despite tackling 2400m for the first time in Saturday's event, trainer John Thompson is confident he'll handle it.

"James Winks rode him a lot last preparation and just said get him to 2400 metres," Thompson said.

"He's injury-free now, he's come back this preparation 100 per cent and he's just a happy horse."
