An emotional Sue Grills fought back tears and declared former Sydney sprinter Dealers had some heavenly assistance to win the XXXX Gold Plate at Doomben.

Dealers maintained his unbeaten record for Grills when he edged out Casholet by a half-neck to give the Tamworth trainer a winning double.

However, it was a day Grills would prefer not to remember as close friend Andrew Futter, who is a part-owner of the six-year-old, was killed in a car accident near Tenterfield in northern NSW on Friday night.

Grills won earlier in the day with Ollie Vollie but the trainer managed to keep her emotions in check for that gelding's victory.

"This is very emotional," Grills said after Dealers' win.

"Andrew was a friend of our family for a long time. He was killed in car accident driving up from Tamworth to watch Dealers run today.

"It's very sad and I'm sure he was up there in heaven helping my apprentice Tim Bell win."

Bell, who is only 16, produced a brilliant display to land the third of a career-best four winners for the day on Dealers despite being trapped three-deep from a wide draw.

The young rider was elated after riding half the card.

"I've ridden four winners in the bush before and when I went out for the last race I just pretended I hadn't ridden a winner," he said.

"It's a thrill to ride four winners especially on a metropolitan track but there won't be any celebrations."

Dealers was originally owned by Darley and trained in Sydney by Peter Snowden before entering Grills' stables last month.

"He doesn't mind winning in a close finish," Grills said.

"He won in a photo when he had his first start for me two weeks ago.

"When I first got him, Peter (Snowden) told me he had to be on the fence and likes to race on the outside of horses and that's what he's done both times for me."

A teary-eyed Grills was unsure of future plans for Dealers who was bought from Darley by a syndicate of 11 including Futter.

The six-year-old son of Viscount was listed in the racebook under Darley's ownership but Grills explained the mix-up.

"When they bought him there were 11 in the syndicate and four of them were overseas and the paperwork was held up," she said.

Grills now hopes to win the $50,000 Tamworth Cup (1400m) in her home town in April with Dealers.

"I'd love to win the Tamworth Cup. I was just beaten in the race a few years ago," she said.
