Colac trainer Bill Cerchi is daring to dream with Diamonds At Dusk who will be on trial at Caulfield for a start in next month's Group One Goodwood Handicap.

Cerchi, who has been training for 28 years, has never had a Group One runner but believes that Diamonds At Dusk deserves his chance in the Adelaide feature sprint on May 2.

He is one of nine Goodwood hopefuls in Saturday's Pink Ribbon Cup (1200m) at Caulfield which will give Cerchi a guide to his prospects.

"I am not sure if he is up to a Goodwood but Luke Nolen rode him two starts ago at Flemington and he thinks he is," Cerchi said.

"We are aiming at it (the Goodwood) and to be honest the horse hasn't been better."

Diamonds At Dusk has won eight of his 25 starts but Cerchi said that with luck at his last five runs he could have easily had a better record.

"He has been unlucky in a couple and poorly ridden in a couple," Cerchi said.

Diamonds At Dusk has finished fifth at his two starts this campaign.

Cerchi said he was denied a first-up victory at Flemington when he drew gate one, raced on the flat side of the track and was beaten less than a length.

"His Flemington run was terrific," Cerchi said.

"He was on the wrong side of the track and I reckon if he comes down the outside he wins."

Diamonds At Dusk was slowly away last start and finished within 3-1/2 lengths of the winner Definitely Ready at Caulfield.

"I don't think I have had him looking any better but he hasn't been able to win either of his races this campaign," Cerchi said.

"His work has been good and I rode him myself the other morning when he went seven (furlongs, 1400m) in evens and he felt terrific."

Cerchi said the only query was the engagement of Mark Pegus who is having his first ride on Diamonds At Dusk.

"He has never ridden him before, I would have liked to have had the same jockey riding him Saturday and in the Goodwood," Cerchi said.

He said Nolen would most likely be offered the Goodwood mount.

TAB Sportsbet released its Goodwood market on Thursday and quoted Diamonds At Dusk at $61. He is $13 in the Pink Ribbon Cup.

Other Goodwood contenders Beltrois ($4.60), Proart ($7) and Zedi Knight ($7.50) lead Saturday's market.

The trio are $13, $21 and $35 respectively for the Goodwood.

Ortayga is $9 on Saturday and $81 for the Goodwood while Gold In Dubai is $11 and $31, Falaise $12 and $16 and Gran Sasso $13 for both races while Maxisun is $13 and $16.
