A horse who has swapped the hustle and bustle of one of Sydney's busiest stables for life on a far western NSW property will be trying to recapture past glories at Warwick Farm on Tuesday.

Rocking On returns to Sydney on a foundation of racing on the NSW picnic circuit - a far cry from his days as the 2006 Grafton Cup winner.

Now an eight-year-old, Rocking On is trained and part-owned by Mark Ward, a hobby trainer who farms 60,000 acres on a property between Condobolin and Cobar.

In another life, Rocking On was a member of Gai Waterhouse's Tulloch Lodge racing empire.

But his time among the Randwick elite came to an end earlier this year when he was auctioned at a tried horses' sale.

"I paid $2,000 for him ... just to have a bit of fun with some friends," Ward said.

"I train as a hobby but we all like to get to the bush meetings as much as we can."

While he hasn't been able to win a race, Rocking On has kept his new owners happy, and his bankroll ticking over, with placings in the Enngonia and Louth Cups.

Further placings at Young and Mungery - meetings for amateur riders - have Ward more hopeful than confident of a Warwick Farm windfall.

"There are hardly any races over 1600 metres for him in the bush and the owners wanted to give him a run over 2400 metres before we spell him," Ward said.

"But it looks like we have run into a pretty strong field, which is unfortunate."

After an eight-hour road trip, Rocking On arrived at Leanne Aspros' Warwick Farm stables late on Sunday fit and ready to run in the Barden Ridge Handicap (2400m).

To help Rocking On's cause, Ward has managed to secure the services of Sydney jockey Jamie Innes.

Innes rode Rocking On in his Grafton Cup victory and is fresh from a winning double at Randwick last Saturday.
