Gai Waterhouse might have been in Melbourne on Saturday but as usual she left her indelible mark on Sydney racing with four winners from four runners at Randwick including improving stayer Lorne Dancer in the City Tattersalls Club Cup.

Having his first start at 2400 metres, Lorne Dancer proved superior to more hardened campaigners as he recorded his sixth win from his past eight starts just a couple of months after there was a "For Sale" sign on his head.

Earlier Northern Meteor set a 1200m track record, two-year Horizons earned a trip to Melbourne and her year older stablemate Rock Kingdom won his third race from four starts.

Waterhouse's trip to Caulfield netted a Group Three win for Royal Discretion.

The win of Lorne Dancer put the icing on the cake as he stepped up from the 2000 metres of his Craven Plate victory.

He tracked Jamberoo for much of the race with Peter Robl content to hand up the lead but asserted his authority on the race when the field straightened for home.

Brave Lancer ran on from the back of the field but could only close to 3-1/2 lengths with Detroit Song a short neck third.

"He was too fit, too classy and too well trained," Robl said.

"He was just simply too good for them."

Waterhouse's stable representative Tania Rouse gave credit to jockey Nash Rawiller for the turnaround in Lorne Dancer's form this preparation.

"Nash suggested he needed a one-eyed blinker because he was looking around at things and not concentrating on his races," Rouse said.

"It has worked and it's really down to Nash.

"And Peter rode him really well today.

"He was happy to let the other horse go and relax Lorne Dancer who is a big strider.

"I don't really know what Gai has in store for him but I don't think he's for sale now."

Northern Meteor will go to the Group One Ascot Vale Stakes in Melbourne if Andrew Baddock, manager of Eduardo Cojuangco's Gooree Stud, has his way.

"I would love to go to the Ascot Vale Stakes," Baddock said.

"I'll discuss it with Gai and it's her call but surely it's hard not to think of a race like that.

"Gai was talking about the Hawkesbury Guineas but he'd just set fire to the place wouldn't he.

"He is something special this horse. You have to be impressed with him, he now holds two track records.

"He is a freak and he is scary."
