Adelaide trainer David Balfour says Right Fong can rebound from his Ballarat Cup failure and score an anniversary win at Flemington.

Balfour said the seven-year-old was racing as well ever but he was unable to find clear running at Ballarat which he believes he should get on his favourite track on Saturday.

"He's racing well but just hasn't had a lot of luck," Balfour said.

"He never got out at Ballarat. He was buried on the fence and he is a horse who only wins when he gets out wide with plenty of room."

Flemington has been a good track for Right Fong who has raced there three times for two wins.

At his other Flemington run two starts ago he finished second to Tagus in the Listed Bundaberg Stakes (1800m) on Melbourne Cup day.

Last year he won the same race on Cup day and this Saturday he will trying to win his second Western Health Cup (2000m) after his success a year ago.

"The 2000m at Flemington is ideal for him," Balfour said.

Right Fong's new rider, apprentice Jason Maskiell, replaces Jarrod Fry who rode the chestnut when ninth to My Bentley in the Ballarat Cup (2200m) on November 21.

The gelding's last win was in the Port Adelaide Cup (2250m) at Morphettville in February.

Right Fong was being aimed at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups but connections pulled him out of both races after his nine-length sixth to Linton in the Group Two Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on October 9.

"I said to the owners I thought the dream was over and to start earning some money with him," Balfour said.

"I have left him (Right Fong) over in Melbourne with my son Todd who has been working him out of Cranbourne and taking him to the beach.

"The horse has done well and everything is fine with him."

Balfour said he wants Right Fong to have another run over 2000m at Flemington, possibly on New Year's Day, and then hopefully target the Port Adelaide Cup again.

Saturday's Flemington meeting has a familiar feel to it with Right Fong one of four runners who were past winners on the same program a year ago.

Tears I Cry is out to win his second Zouki Handicap while Sadalbari won last year's SGE Credit Union Handicap (1700m) which is renamed the Aktrapid Nursing Agency Handicap (1730m) on Saturday.

Three-year-old filly Red Belly Black would add the Spotless Handicap (1000m) to her win in last year's Western Health Sponsors Plate.
