Heavy rain has forced Wednesday's Doomben race meeting to be abandoned.

Queensland Racing Limited chief steward Reid Sanders had no hesitation calling off the meeting after Doomben was drenched following 75 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours.

"The track hasn't dried out like we had hoped," said Sanders following a 7.45 am (AEST) track inspection.

"There's a lot of surface water on the track, particularly between the 600 metres and 900 metres."

Brisbane Turf Club (BTC) course manager Warren Williams was cautiously optimistic on Tuesday the meeting could proceed, provided rain cleared.

However, persistent rain dumped a further 75 millimetres overnight bringing the total rainfall recorded at the track this week to 138 millimetres.

"When Warren and I walked the track this morning the sun started to come out and we thought we might get away with racing with the late start," Sanders said.

"But after we inspected it there was no chance of it proceeding so the meeting has been abandoned."

Williams couldn't recall when the last meeting at Doomben was abandoned because of the state of the track.

"I'm not sure but it would be nearly three years ago," he said.
