Caulfield trainer Luke Oliver is hopeful that improving stayer Determination can live up to his name and bounce back after injury derailed plans for a crack at the Warrnambool Cup earlier this month.

The five-year-old was a chance to back up at Warrnambool after his last-start win in the Des Gleeson Handicap (2400m) at Sandown but became stablebound with a foot abscess.

A back ailment prevented Determination from racing last week but Oliver is confident the gelding can get his campaign back on track with a prominent performance in Wednesday's Bunratty Castle Handicap (2100m) at Sandown.

"I think it is a winnable race for him," Oliver said.

"Because he missed a bit of work we have dropped him back to 2100 metres but I still think he is a good chance.

"He is a bit fresh and probably had we pushed on over 2400 metres right now he would have overraced."

Oliver has a reputation for picking up unwanted gallopers and Determination was another after the chestnut was sacked from the Bryan Guy stable in Queensland after winning just once at Ipswich in his first 15 starts.

Determination has won four of his 13 starts since making his debut for Oliver in July last year, and more success looks on the way.

This campaign has been his best and includes two wins and two seconds from his last four starts.

"He was going really well before having a little bit of an interrupted preparation leading into this race," Oliver said.

Three-time premier jockey Craig Williams again takes the reins after winning on Determination last start.

Oliver said Determination's campaign was now being geared towards the Banjo Paterson series for staying horses.

He will contest heat four of the series over 2400 metres at Sandown on June 13 in the hope of qualifying for the $150,000 final over 2500 metres at Flemington on July 4.

"I think he has a good future as a stayer," Oliver said.

"He's out of a Kaapstad mare and he seems to stay all day."
