Trainer Mick Price hopes to put Proliferate's Australian Derby campaign back on track with an important conditioning run in the Group Two Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Price said he made a mistake chasing Group One success with the More Than Ready colt in the Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 3 and should have stuck to a stayer's program instead.

He says the deviation has made Proliferate vulnerable over 2040 metres in Friday's night's Alister Clark but believes it is the best option at this stage of his campaign.

"We entered him for the Randwick Guineas (1600m) on Saturday but against Manawanui and those horses he would get flogged," Price said.

"He's a stayer and last start he should have run over 1800 (metres) then in the Alister Clark instead of trying to win a Group One mile which came unstuck.

"Going from a mile to 2040 metres on Friday night may catch me short with him but with a view to where we should be going it is the right race.

"It is 13 days between runs coming from a mile but I'm happy with him and he's a clean winded horse."

A winner of three of his five starts, Proliferate finished seventh to Mosheen in the Australian Guineas after being bumped early in the race, clipping heels and getting unbalanced in the last 100 metres after making heavy contact with another runner.

"He didn't have much luck in the Guineas but he pulled up all right," Price said.

Other Alister Clark entries include VRC Derby winner Sangster and third-placed Sabrage. They finished second last and sixth in the Australian Guineas respectively.

Australian Guineas third placegetter Mister Milton and fifth-placed Highly Recommended are also nominated for the Alister Clark.

Meanwhile Price's undefeated Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready will work the Sydney way at Caulfield on Tuesday as part of her Golden Slipper preparation.

Price said the filly was 12 to 14kg heavier after a short break following her three-length Diamond win at Caulfield on February 25.

Her Slipper prelude will be the Group Two Riesling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 24.

"She has to improve but all is on course," Price said.

"She come back good from her little break and now has a got a couple of main gallops in front of her.

"She will work the reverse way on Tuesday then work again on Saturday and the following Tuesday before going to Sydney."
