Zavite's win in the Australia Day Cup signalled a turnaround in the fortunes of Anthony Cummings who is looking to continue the trend with Even Flow at Rosehill.

Before Monday when Miss Darcey and Zavite both won, 2009 had not been kind to Cummings with Turffontein out of the placings in the Group One Telegraph Handicap in New Zealand and Red Lord suffering a freak injury in a paddock accident, fracturing a vertebra.

Although Cummings admits two-year-old Even Flow has a tough task in the www.theslipper.com.au Handicap (1100m) against boom colt Manhattan Rain, he is happy with his progress since his second to Sampler at Kembla Grange on January 10.

"He goes okay but it will be an effort to beat Gai's horse," Cummings said.

"I am happy with him and I expect natural improvement but there is a big wrap on the other one."

Manhattan Rain is a half-brother to multiple Group One winner Redoute's Choice who is now the country's most expensive stallion.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Manhattan Rain has had two barrier trials, winning the most recent and beating leading Blue Diamond Stakes contender Real Saga in the process.

That performance fuelled Waterhouse's confidence with equally well-bred stablemate More Joyous already a winner and the Golden Slipper favourite.

Waterhouse plans to keep the pair apart until the $3.5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 4.

Cummings is not sure if Even Flow will make it as far as the Slipper but is hoping he can win his share of races.

The colt is by dual Doomben 10,000 winner Falvelon who also won the Hong Kong Sprint on two occasions when it was a 1000m race and before it was elevated to international Group One status.

Cummings also has lightly-raced seven-year-old French Gaze racing at Rosehill with the gelding to run in the Veolia Environmental Services Handicap (1100m).

French Gaze is the winner of four of his 12 starts and will be ridden by Chris Munce with Dan Nikolic to partner Even Flow.

Cummings was at the New Zealand yearling sales on Australia Day and missed Zavite's win but said he had been pleased with the young horses he bought across the Tasman.

"I bought nine yearlings, a Zabeel, a couple by One Cool Cat and two by Pins," he said.

"They are nice types and hopefully can measure up."
