Veteran galloper Fast Future will be on trial at Moonee Valley for a crack at the Canberra Cup at the end of the month.

Fitter for two runs this campaign after a tendon injury, the eight-year-old, who is a proven stakes performer, will contest Saturday's NYE@MVRC Handicap (1600m).

Trainer Russell Cameron said Fast Future's two runs this campaign had been solid and expects a good run from him in the 11-horse field which features other leading chances Zagreb (59kg) and Hanks (57kg).

Fast Future has 56kg and will be ridden by Michael Rodd.

"Both his runs have been good this time in and if he goes well this week he may run eight days later in the Canberra Cup," Cameron said.

Cameron has trained Fast Future since April 2008 when he was transferred from the care of Brian Jenkins.

Injuries have limited Fast Future to 46 starts and he has won six races including the Caloundra Cup (2400m) in his first campaign with Cameron.

However luck has deserted him over the last two years with him winless despite still being competitive at stakes level.

"He's a handy old horse and last start he finished off the race all right," Cameron said.

At his first run for 10 months, Fast Future made ground when ninth to Berringama in the Harrolds Plate (1400m) at Caulfield on October 9 and last start hit the line strongly to get within three lengths of Launay in the Masterfoods Condiments Plate (1600m) at Flemington on November 6.

Cameron had planned to run the Generous gelding in last week's Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield but decided against the plan when the weather turned bad.

Fast Future is a duffer in the wet and for that reason Cameron has twice given him a Queensland winter campaigns.

"He has run in some good races, mainly in Queensland, and he looks good at the moment and I'm happy with him," Cameron said.
