Trainer Danny Williams hasn't given up hope of Cape Breton forcing his way into the Melbourne Cup.

Cape Breton, who won the Queensland Cup (3200m) in July, has to win Saturday's Listed Tattersalls Cup (2400m) at Randwick to be any chance of running in the great race at Flemington next month.

Williams is hoping a Tattersalls Cup victory will attract a significant enough penalty to bump Cape Breton up the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup.

Punters don't give Cape Breton much of a chance with the seven-year-old at $41 on TAB Sportsbet opening market for Saturday's race.

"I see Bart (Cummings) has done it a few times, so it can be done," Williams said.

"A kilo penalty or something like that would be handy."

Cape Breton has 50 kilograms for the Melbourne Cup and is 50th in the order of entry.

"There's no doubt we have to win this for him to be any hope of getting a start in the Cup," Williams said.

Cummings has used the Tattersalls Cup strategy successfully with the likes of Grandmaster (1997) and Perpetual Check (1998), who both earned Melbourne Cup starts by winning Saturday's 2400 metre race.

Cummings' son Anthony is trying the same thing in this year's race with Nothin' Leica Cat.

Cape Breton comes into the race after failing to beat a runner home on a very heavy Randwick surface in the Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) on October 3 won by Speed Gifted.

"He couldn't handle the track last start even though he usually handles the wet tracks but he never went a stride in it the other day for some reason," Williams said.

"We're just hoping he can recapture that good form he showed leading into the race. I haven't given up on him."

Cape Breton, who defeated Petushki by a length to win the Queensland Cup, resumed with a sixth to Drumbeats in the Group Two Shannon Stakes (1500m) on September 19.

He followed that up with an unplaced run in the Group One George Main Stakes (1600m) a week later.

Williams said Cape Breton would be aimed at Flemington regardless of the outcome in the Tattersalls Cup.

"There's a 2800 metre race (Lavazza Long Black) at Flemington on the same day as the Cup and it looks like a race which might suit us," Williams said.

TAB Sportsbet has the Bernie Howlett-trained Macknuckle as its equal $5 favourite along with Enzedex Eagle from the Chris Waller yard.

Enzedex Eagle racked up four successive third placings including the Wyong and Newcastle Cups before he too failed in the Metropolitan on the heavy track.

The Bernie Howlett-trained Macknuckle has had three recent starts in Melbourne running fourth to Speed Gifted at Flemington and most recently fourth again in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley won by emerging stayer Alcopop.

Speed Gifted and Alcopop are currently the equal second favourites for the Melbourne Cup behind 2007 winner Efficient.
