Buffering's sustained speed is his biggest asset and jockey Michael Rodd plans to make the most of it in Friday night's William Reid Stakes.

The four-year-old will be chasing an elusive Group One win in the 1200-metre Moonee Valley feature having been placed at the top level four times.

Most recent of those was in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington earlier this month when Hay List overhauled him in the final bounds.

Rodd has partnered Buffering at his past two starts and is adamant there is only one way to ride him.

"He's just got one pace and it's flat out," Rodd said.

"That's pretty much how you've got to ride him.

"He doesn't have much of a turn of foot, he just keeps picking up.

"Where he wins his races is he gets all the other horses off the bridle and out of their comfort zones early, and chasing him."

Buffering's last win was at Moonee Valley in the Group Three McEwen Stakes (1000m) in September when he led and fought hard to hold out Crystal Lily and Atomic Force.

One of two William Reid runners for Queensland trainer Rob Heathcote along with Woorim, Buffering has drawn barrier three - immediately inside odds-on favourite and Newmarket conqueror Hay List.

"It didn't matter really where he drew," Rodd said.

"Obviously, it's nice to draw in there, he might not have to work as hard."

Hay List was passed fit to run on Thursday after undergoing a veterinary examination on a foot abscess.

He will be examined again by vets upon arrival at Moonee Valley.

Hay List conceded four kilos to Buffering in the Newmarket but the pair will carry the same impost under the weight-for-age conditions of the William Reid.

Rodd is mindful Buffering meets Hay List worse at the weights but he isn't conceding defeat.

"My bloke is honest. You look at his record and it's fantastic, obviously not as good as Hay List's, but he always turns up on race day and runs his best," Rodd said.

"He's one from one around the Valley.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he came out and beat him (Hay List).

"But he's got a little bit against him. Coming back to the level weights is going to make it a bit harder."

Hay List was the $1.45 favourite with TAB Sportsbet on Thursday with Buffering next pick at $8 ahead of Foxwedge ($13) and Woorim ($14).
