Toowoomba trainer Norm Hilton is hoping he hasn't gone to the well once too often as he finetunes his quality galloper Carry Me Bluey for a shot at the Bernborough Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Carry Me Bluey will be having his fifth run this campaign following a seven-week let-up in the $200,000 Listed 1615m feature and Hilton has declared it will be the horse's final start this preparation.

"He's had some tough racing this preparation but he's still in really good shape and has pulled up well after his last run," Hilton said.

"I'm just hoping he's got another one in him and all the indications say he has.

"This race has always been on his agenda and it's definitely not an afterthought.

"Win, lose or draw he'll be in the paddock after Saturday."

At his last start, Carry Me Bluey carried 54kg to victory when aided by a perfect Chris Munce ride, following an unlucky second at his previous start when Munce admitted to pilot error.

The four-year-old has drawn perfectly in barrier two in the Bernborough and will again carry 54kg.

Hilton said he would leave the tactics up to Munce but admitted he would rather the gelding be ridden quietly and allowed to get to the outside in the straight.

"I'll be leaving it up to Chris, he knows the horse really well," Hilton said.

"But I think he's much better off when he's allowed to settle and find his feet early and then get to the outside rather than being bottled up inside horses."

Hilton said he was in two minds over the long-term future with Carry Me Bluey and was deciding between a Sydney autumn campaign or a tilt at the Brisbane winter carnival.

Carry Me Bluey's main opposition looks likely to come in the shape of the John Thompson-trained Wonderful Lass who has drawn awkwardly in barrier 11 while Lawrie Mayfield-Smith's Danagaze looms as a serious threat after drawing barrier four.
