Gutsy Sydney galloper Black Piranha capped a remarkably successful Queensland campaign and earned a tilt at the Doncaster Handicap with a narrow win in the $100,000 Sunshine Coast Cup.

Black Piranha took his Queensland record to two wins and a close second from three starts when he raced against his usual pattern but still outgunned his rivals in Sunday's Listed event.

Winning trainer Con Karakatsanis successfully selected last month's Goldmarket Handicap as Black Piranha's lead-up run to his main mission in the Magic Millions Cup and he only happened on the Sunshine Coast Cup after the horse was narrowly beaten by Masai Pride eight days ago.

"I was never really worried about backing him up," Karakatsanis said.

"He ate up and did everything right after his last run and he convinced me he was ready to go again."

Black Piranha's win was a welcome consolation for his regular jockey Tye Angland.

Angland had ridden the horse at four of his past five runs including his resounding win in the Goldmarket but the talented hoop was replaced by Craig Williams in the Magic Millions Cup because of a careless riding suspension.

Black Piranha is a renowned backmarker and Angland was reluctantly forced to ride the horse against his usual pattern after he bounded out of barrier three.

"He went really well. I was a little bit closer than where I wanted to be but he jumped so well we used the good gate and that's why we were so close," Angland said.

"I was a bit worried about being up there but the horses on my outside kept bustling me and I had to hold my ground."

Angland drove Black Piranha ($2.50 fav) inside the early leader Sneaky Long halfway up the straight and the Clang five-year-old held off the fast-finishing Bareena ($4) to score by a head with Calchris ($11) a further 1-1/2 lengths third.

Black Piranha will return to Sydney this week for a short spell and Karakatsanis said the Group One Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on April 18 was his next goal.

"I think the mile will be perfect for him next time in and he'll be a real lightweight chance in the Doncaster," Karakatsanis said.

"It's a big step in class but he's come of age this preparation and the trip to away might have made him."
