Sydney mare Graceful Anna has produced a convincing barrier trial performance in readiness for a comeback under lights.

Graceful Anna finished second in a Rosehill heat on Tuesday, with trainer David Pfieffer and jockey Hugh Bowman giving the sprinter the all clear to resume at Canterbury next week.

Pfieffer has picked out the $100,000 Listed Canterbury Classic (1100m) on Friday week as the first-up race for the mare who this time last year claimed the $1 million Magic Millions three-year-old race.

"She wasn't sent out to run blistering time or win the trial by eight lengths," Pfieffer said.

"It can be difficult with her because every time she goes out she tries too hard and can flatten herself.

"If Hugh had asked her to win by eight she'd do it for you but being conservative was the name of the game."

Pfieffer said an extra month in the paddock and the likelihood of Graceful Anna being asked to carry the grandstand had swayed him against chasing more Magic Millions riches with the four-year-old.

"I spoke to the handicappers about what weight she would get in the fillies and mares at the Gold Coast," Pfieffer said.

"More than likely she was going to get 61kg and the other race, the Magic Millions Cup, wasn't an option because I couldn't find a suitable leadup race."

Graceful Anna hasn't raced since finishing down the track in the Stradbroke Handicap.

It was the mare's first Group One assignment and one which provides the only black mark on an otherwise outstanding career.

Pfieffer is desperate to revisit the Group One stage deeper into Graceful Anna's campaign.

"I want to get past the Canterbury Classic first but down the track I want to look at a race like the Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide," he said.

"Getting a Group One win on her record would obviously add a lot to her value as a broodmare."

Bowman has been booked for the Canterbury Classic ride.

Pfieffer is preparing for a hectic time next week with Gai's Choice to take her place in the $1 million Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast 24 hours after Graceful Anna resumes.

Gai's Choice earned her Gold Coast stripes with a surprise win at Randwick last Saturday.

"The race is looking nowhere near as strong as it has been in the past few years," Pfieffer said.

"There won't be too many in the race who have already won at seven furlongs (1400m)," Pfieffer said.

"My filly has and she's big and strong so she deserves her chance."

Corey Brown rode Gai's Choice at Randwick but Pfieffer said the leading jockey had committed to Posh Chic, a borderline chance to make the field, as his Guineas mount.

Gai's Choice is a $21 chance in latest TAB Sportsbet Guineas betting.
