Jayco boss Gerry Ryan says French stayer Americain may be the horse he has been looking for to realise a dream of winning the Melbourne Cup.

"I think he could be (the right horse)," Ryan, who has owned scores of racehorses over the last 10 years, said.

"I think everyone dreams to win a Melbourne Cup or just run in a Melbourne Cup so it is a dream come true."

Ryan, along with Kevin and Colleen Bamford, earlier this year bought Americain for a little more than $400,000 after he raced successfully in France and disappointed on American tracks over shorter distances.

Trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, he has since won his last three starts in France including most recently the Group Two Kergorlay Stakes (3000m) on August 22.

Americain is stabled at the Werribee International Horse Centre and Ryan said he had pleased the stable with how well he had settled in to his new surroundings.

The six-year-old will make his Australian debut in the Geelong Cup on October 20 on the way to the Melbourne Cup 13 days later.

It has been a proven path for past internationals including Media Puzzle who won both races in 2002.

In 2008 Bauer won at Geelong and was beaten a breath by Viewed in the Melbourne Cup while last year the Godolphin stayer Crime Scene ran sixth at Geelong and finished second to Shocking in the Melbourne Cup.

"We are getting good reports about him and the Geelong Cup will give him one good hitout before the Melbourne Cup," Ryan said.

"We just want to be competitive."

Champion French jockey Gerald Mosse will ride for the first time in Australia when he partners Americain at Geelong and in the Melbourne Cup.

Unlike Ryan, Bamford has experienced the exhilaration of having a Cup runner with Jardines Lookout who finished third to Makybe Diva in 2003 and Far Cry who was second last to Brew in 2000.

"We bought him (Americain) to have a runner in the Melbourne Cup and he's won three races since then and nearly paid for himself," Bamford said.

"It is exciting but he's not there yet."

Ryan said Americain only had to match his looks on the track to be a force in the Melbourne Cup.

"On looks he could win it," Ryan said.
