Four-year-old Amaethon races in the shadow of his younger sister Crystal Lily but is on track for his own feature race success in next month's Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have thought highly of the Al Maher gelding since he was a yearling and there is a feeling in the stable he is ready stand up this campaign.

Amaethon is among 29 nominations for Saturday's Pink Ribbon Cup (1200m) at Caulfield which is likely to be his last run before the Group Three Victoria Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield on April 23.

Last start he was fourth to Zedi Knight when resuming at Moonee Valley where he is yet to place but but he will be much better suited at Caulfield.

He is a past winner at the track and has placed at each of his other four Caulfield starts.

"His form around the Valley has always been ordinary but there was nothing else to run him in," Zahra said.

"It will be three weeks between runs for him at Caulfield on Saturday and that is ideal.

"He needs his races spaced and his main aim is the Victoria Handicap.

"He probably needs a win to make sure he gets there but he's a horse who has got a lot of potential."

Amaethon has won three of his 16 starts and more than $200,000, but it pales in comparison to last start Newmarket Handicap runner-up Crystal Lily, who has won four of 11 starts including last year's Golden Slipper Stakes and banked $2.5 million in stakes.

Crystal Lily will run in Friday's Group One William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Last campaign Amaethon promised a feature race win was on the way when second to Avenue in the Listed Pin & Win For Epilepsy Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and fourth to Larry's Never Late in the Group Three Sandown Stakes (1500m).

Other entries for Saturday's race include former top three-year-old Carrara, Zedi Knight, Stanzout, Time Matters, Pinnacles, Marconi, Johnny Fiasco, At the Heads and Rocking Force.
