Leading Sydney apprentice Josh Adams has been outed for seven months for returning a positive test to an unnamed banned drug.

A urine sample provided by the 19-year-old at the Gosford race meeting on April 5 showed the presence of the prohibited substance.

In reaching the penalty at Tuesday's inquiry, stewards said two months would be deducted from the sentence if Adams satisfactorily completed counselling.

Adams has what appears to be an unassailable 25-win lead over Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins for this season's Sydney apprentices' premiership.

Regarded as one of the brightest talents in NSW, Adams transferred his indentures earlier this month from Garry Frazer at Hawkesbury to Gerald Ryan at Rosehill.
