It didn’t take punters long to back Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente in Saturday’s Group 2 $220,000 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. When first markets went up yesterday Fiorente, making his return to the racetrack following his memorable win in our great race last November, was installed the $2.20 favourite, ahead of Pakal at $4.80, and Star Rolling and Foreteller both at $6. On Thursday morning Fiorente had been trimmed into $2.10 with Pakal out to $5 and Star Rolling enjoying some support into $5.50. Trainer Gai Waterhouse says Fiorente will go to the Australian Cup second-up, before heading to Sydney where his ultimate aim will be the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on April 19 at Royal Randwick, on the second day of the inaugural The Championships.
