Will the mighty Dunaden tackle this year's Melbourne Cup? Maybe yes, maybe no, according to latest reports. There's a growing chance his connections will set him instead for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France. Dunaden's owner, Sheikh Fahad, is a member of Qatar's ruling family and they sponsor the Arc so we can see that it's a race he'd love to win. Sheikh Fahad is likely to have at least one Melbourne Cup runner - he's bought a smart type named Vadamar from the Aga Khan. And who's the trainer? None other than Americain's French trainer Alain Royer Dupre. Vadamar ran behind Dunaden in Grp 1 at Sha Tin in Hong Kong last December and he's a winner at Grp 2 in France last year after a 7th in the UK Derby at Epsom.

Latest Melbourne Cup betting: Americain is on top at $13.00 with IASbet.com. Then comes ATC Derby winner Ethiopia at $15.00, followed by a cluster on $17.00 - Lucas Cranach, Atlantic Jewel (!), Mawingo and Green Moon. The talented Red Cadeaux, already earmarked for a return to Melbourne, is at $26.00 following nhis great effort in last year's race.

Don't miss the July/August issue of Practical Punting magazine - I'll have a 3-page long-range preview of the Melbourne Cup. Last year in my earlybird tips I nailed Dunaden when he was at 100/1!
