That Mysterious Thing We Call "The Punter".

I never fail to be amazed by punters.

The race that I regard as the hardest on the card (any card you like) for the day is being hit hard already, and it's 10pm the night before the race.

It's for three year olds. It's Group One (should it be?) and it's at 1400 metres.

How can any sane person outlay big money on this race?

We have the Golden Slipper winner, and reportedly the connections were very unhappy with the third placing first up. Should have won, they believe.

Then there's the boom three year old, undefeated at four runs this time in training.

And the possibly outstanding three year old of them all, which beat the classy older horses last weekend.

Then there's the highly regarded and sharp Dane Shadow colt.

And the Hussonet colt who's surely allowed one bad day.

And an unlucky Fastnet Rock colt that could be much better than his last run might suggest.

A Danehill Dancer that his trainer has a a lot of time for and expects to go close.

Oh, and a straight American breed that has a foul barrier but might be a big finisher.

And a girl that darn near won the Slipper, and ran very well at her first run this time in.

I think I got most of the chances in that lot...

See what I mean?

Guesswork.

Sure, in a month or so we will be able to make some realistic comments, but right now we're in the dark.

And THIS is the race they're putting thousands on. Twenty four hours (or near enough) beforehand.

One born every day?

If there's another explanation, I can't think if it.
