Happy Birthday and Happy New Resolution!

No I'm not going to preach. Saturday August 1 is all horses' birthday here in the southern hemisphere. That's the Happy Birthday wish above.

What about the New Resolution?

Well, that is entirely in our hands. It's a great day for a resolution, better than New Year's Day, in fact, for us punters.

Start the new season with a commitment to making a profit. If you are already making one, and I mean in the long term, then congratulations. If not, read on...

I suggest we need only a handful of principles to establish, in order to make major inroads into any potential losses:

1. Don't be greedy.

2. Be patient (Same thing? Well, it's along the same lines).

3. Bet within your means and use only a small percentage of your long term bank on any one day.

4. Determine that bank percentage NOW. If it is more than 2%, it won't be designed to last a full year, will it?

5. Make some serious and long term decisions (there's that expression again, I know, but I see it as vital to success).

6. Stick to your plans and decisions.

7. Never regard yourself as knowing it all. Always be prepared to learn more, even when you are doing well.

There we are. Seven in all. They may just be the most important seven resolutions you make in the racing year.
