TOP jockey Corey Brown was under fire from Racing NSW stewards after new whip rules were brought in on Saturday for the start of the new season, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: New padded whips are in play, and jockeys are not permitted to hit a horse on continuous strides over the latter stages of a race.

''I thought I would have been OK,'' Brown said at the end of a fruitful Saturday meeting at Rosehill where he rode two winners and had two second placings. ''I was one of the best students at the training we had. But when you are out there in a race it is hard to distinguish between following the rules and trying to win a race. It plays on your mind and makes it hard to concentrate on what you should be doing, and that's winning races.''

Brown was reprimanded twice for exceeding the whip rule in races at the weekend, most notably when hitting Stryker five times in succession when it ran second to Hus Der Lieften.

''It now comes down to a matter of if I offend again I'll be fined,'' Brown said. ''After going through the training to adjust to the new whip rules, I thought I'd be OK. I was the last person I thought would have a problem with it. Now I'm going to have to look at my style. I've got my Equicizer at home so I'll look at practising on it so I can adhere to the rules. I'll be practising with using the backhanded whip action, which isn't my normal style either. Otherwise I'll be in trouble.''
