Reigning BMW Caulfield Cup champion Southern Speed will return to Melbourne a winner after barging back into the winner's list in the Penny Edition Stakes today in Adelaide.

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained mare outclassed her rivals with a dominant display in the $80,000 Listed event.

Despite settling towards the rear and being pushed wide on the turn, when urged along by rider Clare Lindop, the five-year-old hit top gear at the 250m to take control of the 1400m event.

The daughter of Southern Image surged away to score by 2-3/4 lengths from former Ballarat Cup winner My Bentley and the locally-trained Bagman.

It was Southern Speed's final start in South Australia before returning to Victoria, where her first assignment will be the $300,000 Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on 8 September.

Southern Speed wasn't the only Cups prospect to catch the eye today with some fine runs by Melbourne-bound gallopers in the feature weight-for-age race in Sydney, the $175,000 Group 2 Warwick Stakes.

The Peter Snowden-trained Pinwheel won the 1400m event for the second year in a row, but dual Group 1 winner Secret Admirer - who is also targeting the BMW Caulfield Cup - flashed home to grab second.

Lamasery, a Melbourne Cup Week winner from last year impressed with a close-up fourth placing, while Australian Derby runner-up Polish Knight finished midfield and the Peter Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven wasn't knocked around when beating just two home.

Moody didn't come away from Sydney without a feature win, however, preparing Moment Of Change to resume a winner in the $100,000 Listed Show County Quality (1200m).

The former boom three-year-old powered to a comfortable 1-1/4-length win over Title, with Somepin Anypin close up in third.

The Warwick Farm meeting also saw buzz filly Nechita affirm her high rating with a brilliant win in the $125,000 Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).

The John Thompson-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock made it two wins from as many starts when she beat Meidung and Dear Demi. (www.racingvictoria.net.au)
