IT IS NOT a race that so much unearths future group 1 horses, but the Eclipse Stakes at Betfair Park has re-launched several stagnant careers and so it may again today if the once-popular Rhyno Chaser is in the finish, reports The Age.

It says: For ex-Kiwi and now Hawkesbury-based Wanda Ings, the group 3, $125,000 race is a telling one in the mixed career of Rhyno Chaser who, 14 months after his last victory, is on the verge of either falling back into the large pack of nondescript restricted-class gallopers or once again emerging as an elite performer.

A most promising young horse, back ailments and other niggling injuries have halted his rise to the elite weight-for-age events as many had predicted for him.

''The way he's putting those niggling injuries behind him is very encouraging, but it might not be until the autumn when he's really ready to show us his best,'' Ings said yesterday.

''He's had no serious problems and no leg worries, but the problems are enough to pull them up and that's what happened to him. But he's getting better, no doubt, and I think he'll run a big race on Saturday.''

Ings has a dozen horses in her team and Rhyno Chaser, who she's trained for just a handful of starts, is the horse that could deliver her breakthrough victory.

''He was with Kevin Moses and then Graeme Rogerson at Randwick before I got him and he's a horse that has really appreciated having a paddock during the day,'' she said.

At his second start, Rhyno Chaser won the listed Baillieu Stakes at Randwick and at his fourth start finished fourth behind the likes of Samantha Miss and Sebring in the group 1 Champagne Stakes.

As a spring three-year-old he was unluckily beaten in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle before winning the Dulcify Quality before a spell.

In the autumn, he contested the Rosehill and Randwick guineas, as well as the Doncaster Handicap, but his only glimpse of form came when third in the Carbine Club Stakes.
