LAST season's top two-year-old Manhattan Rain returned to the trial track at Rosehill yesterday with a victory against older horses, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt won the AJC Sires' Produce Stakes in the autumn and was placed in the Golden Slipper and Champagne Stakes. With Blake Shinn in the saddle, Manhattan Rain cruised to a 5¢ length win in a 1030-metre trial yesterday. Manhattan Rain will miss the Sydney spring carnival, with Waterhouse instead targeting the Danehill Stakes at Flemington on September 5 as his resuming run.

Stradbroke Handicap winner Black Piranha also trialled at Rosehill yesterday, and finished second in its heat with Tye Angland aboard. Trainer Con Karakatsanis said Black Piranha, which was also the runner-up in the Doncaster Mile earlier this year, would resume from a spell in the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle on September 16.
