DANIELLE JOHNSON, the daughter of New Zealand riding great Peter Johnson, is headed to Australia early next month to ride at country venues. The 19-year-old Auckland-based apprentice is on a two-week scholarship sponsored by New Zealand-born Rosehill trainer Chris Waller in conjunction with Auckland Racing Club.

Johnson has ridden more than 100 winners in her homeland, 37 this season. Peter Johnson rode champion Sunline in the mare's first four wins and is one of only 20 Kiwis to ride more than 1000 winners. Waller has agreed to sponsor an apprentice each year to cross the Tasman. "I'd like Danielle to experience all facets of racing here and ride every day if possible," Waller said. "I may have some Sydney rides for her but she'll be travelling to country areas where ever possible." Johnson, managed by Greg Burke, will ride at Goulburn on June 5. (www.smh.com.au)
