Rock Kingdom provided Gai Waterhouse with her sixth win in the time honoured Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick. The $200,000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale purchase looked set to be nabbed at the 100 metre mark when challenged by the fancied runner Rangirangdoo, but showing great courage he held that runner out for a magnificent win.

A short head margin was declared between Rock Kingdom ($10) and Rangirangdoo ($4.80), while last Saturday's Group One winner Road to Rock ($4.60 fav) was another length back.

"What a fabulous win," Waterhouse said moments after the courageous victory. "It's very exciting....We thought long and hard about how we could win this race. So we put the shades back on him and I wanted him in the box seat...Blake rode him sensationally. Not because he won the race, but because he used his brains...He sat up outside the leader. He didn't try to take the leader on. He sat there just waiting to pounce."

The win provided former star Melbourne rider with yet another feature race victory.

He said: "Winning an Epsom - it's just unbelievable. You watch these races as a kid and dream of winning them....It's just fantastic. The horse did such a good job...It was a very good run. He travelled well and handled the conditions. And he's a fighter. He's shown that before."

The win continued a remarkable run in the race for trainer Gai Waterhouse who's winners include three Magic Millions graduates and former top war horse, home bred Desert War. Her previous winners in the race were Theseo (2008), Desert War (2004 and 2005), Excellerator (2002) and Iron Horse (1997).
