AKAVOROUN made a triumphant return with a big win at Warrnambool one year after his last race. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper made it three wins from as many starts when he burst through the field to win the Benchmark 70 Handicap by 1.5 lengths.

Maher said he’s had to be patient with this son of Lacryma Cristi, but noted “I’d rather run him on a wet track than a hard track.

“I was happy to come here today. I was just glad to get him back to the races. He’s a very progressive type. I think he can keep going through his grades and your can dare to dream.”

Maher praised Michelle Payne for the work she has put in, not only with Akavoroun, but the rest of his stable.

“It was a great ride and she must have felt like she had something underneath her,” he said.
