Australian jockey James Winks has been granted a release from his riding contract in Hong Kong and will finish up his tenure on Sunday.

Winks, whose major wins in Australia include the 2008 Group One Yalumba Stakes aboard Douro Valley and Winter Stakes on Absolut Glam, approached the Hong Kong Jockey Club for a release on Friday.

He said he was having trouble maintaining his weight which was reducing his amount of quality rides.

Winks will ride at Sha Tin this Sunday before returning to Australia but he did get some consolation on the weekend with a victory aboard the Paul O'Sullivan-trained Spectacular Award.

Winks has ridden five winners from 89 rides this season with his stint in Hong Kong highlighted by his Group One victory aboard the John Moore-trained Dim Sum in the Chairmans Prize in February.

The hoop had been based in Melbourne before taking up his contract in Hong Kong.
