A part-time trainer with a lone Group One win to his credit is convinced he can delay celebrations for Gai Waterhouse's 100th victory at racing's elite level at Randwick.

Waterhouse will be chasing her milestone during the biggest meeting of the Sydney spring carnival on Saturday and her bid starts with More Strawberries in the Flight Stakes (1600m).

On the back of victories in the Tea Rose Stakes and the Furious Stakes, More Strawberries is the warm favourite to propel Waterhouse into the exclusive club.

But Victorian trainer Stuart Webb, with just three horses in work, says he has enough firepower in Yosei to ensure Waterhouse might have to wait a few more races to reach her century.

"There is a lot of form intertwined around Yosei which has stood up so I think she's got a terrific chance," Webb, who doubles as stable foreman for leading trainer Robert Smerdon, said.

Yosei has already caused one Sydney upset this year with a photo-finish win in the Sires' Produce Stakes at Randwick over the autumn carnival.

Finishing behind the diminutive filly were horses such as Toorak Toff, the subsequent Golden Rose winner who is pre-post favourite for the Caulfield Guineas.

Yosei has drawn gate nine in a field reduced to 11 runners on Thursday because of Brazilian Pulse's scratching but Webb has a simple plan to cover the wide alley.

"The consensus is that there isn't a lot of speed in the race," he said.

"On that basis I'm happy to have her dug out of the gates.

"That way Michelle (Payne) can go forward and sit behind More Strawberries or sit outside her and assess the situation from there."

Yosei has been fitted for her Flight Stakes assignment with two Melbourne runs including an eye-catching effort for fifth to Divorces at Caulfield on September 18.

Her closing sectionals were among the best of the Underwood Stakes meeting.
