Champion jockey Damien Oliver will ride Australian star Nicconi in the July Cup at Newmarket in England on Saturday week.

International jockey Frankie Dettori partnered the David Hayes-trained entire when he finished fourth to Equiano in the King's Stand Stakes (1006m) at Royal Ascot on June 15.

Dettori is required to ride the well-performed Australian-bred colt Denman, now with the powerful Godolphin stable, in the 1200m July Cup.

Oliver has ridden Nicconi three times for a win in the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on January 30 before two disappointing efforts in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley and the Newmarket Hcp (1200m) at Flemington.

The son of Bianconi will be having his last start before returning to Australia for a career at Widden Stud in NSW's Hunter Valley.

Meanwhile, trainer Gary Portelli said Gold Trail would have a crucial track gallop on Saturday morning to determine whether the sprinter remained in England to contest the King George Stakes at Goodwood on July 29 and possibly the Nunthorpe Stakes at York a month later.
