High class sprinter Lucky Secret is set to farewell handicap racing in the Oakleigh Plate.

Trainer Tony Vasil has had the five-year-old in a holding pattern for the past month waiting for the Group One sprint on his home track.

A last-start winner of the weight-for-age Group Two Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, Lucky Secret is expected to get 56.5kg in the Oakleigh Plate while Lightning Stakes winner Scenic Blast will be the equal topweight on 57kg with Typhoon Zed.

Vasil said Lucky Secret was creeping up in the weights and could be restricted to weight-for-age racing after Saturday.

"If he wins the Oakleigh Plate he is out of handicaps forever," Vasil said.

Vasil could have run Lucky Secret the last two weeks in the Listed Doveton Handicap and the Group One Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley but decided against both assignments.

He said he scratched the gelding from the Doveton after the horse drew barrier one and he feared the track would chop out on the inside which it did.

The Australia Stakes would have meant a showdown with weight-for-age sprint stars Apache Cat and Weekend Hussler which he was happy to avoid with the Oakleigh Plate just a week away.

Among the 26 Oakleigh Plate entries are 2007 winner Undue, Queenslanders Burdekin Blues and Swiss Ace and reigning Newmarket Handicap favourite Fist Of Fury.

Vasil said Lucky Secret would be champing at the bit to get back to competition with 29 days between runs.

"A little gallop during the week and he will be right," Vasil said.

"We will keep him fresh and sharp for it."

The Oakleigh Plate is a helter-skelter sprint with pressure on from start to finish.

"I suppose in a race like the Oakleigh Plate pressure finds out what the good horses are," Vasil said.

"He (Lucky Secret) is pretty smart, pretty quick, with a high cruising speed who will be putting pressure on other runners."

Vasil said after the Oakleigh Plate Lucky Secret would target whatever races suitable for him at the Valley, even to the exclusion of other tracks, especially Flemington.

Vasil didn't bother nominating Lucky Secret for the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 7.

"We won't be taking him to Flemington ever again," Vasil said.

"He has had two goes there and run the most two putrid races in his life."

A winner of 10 races from 15 starts, Lucky Secret is a specialist at Moonee Valley where he has posted six wins and a third from seven runs.
