Newcastle will host a race meeting on Tuesday to compensate for lost meetings in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.

The 10-race Newcastle meeting, announced by Racing NSW on Friday, has been organised as both the Coffs Harbour meeting on Sunday and the Ballina program on Tuesday appear very unlikely to go ahead due to prolonged heavy rain in those areas.

The fields for Newcastle will be drawn from the Coffs Harbour and Ballina meetings.

The concept was the brainchild of Coffs Harbour Race Club vice-president Michael O'Neill.

"During this prolonged period of wet weather on the North Coast it is important that participants are provided racing opportunities and I thank Mr O'Neill for this innovative solution," Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys said in a statement.
