Kerrin McEvoy is looking for a dream result on the Darley-owned Retrieve as he chases his first Victoria Derby win less than two weeks after his comeback to riding from serious injury.

McEvoy, who has finished second in the classic on three occasions, says Retrieve, a last start winner of the Norman Robinson Stakes, is shaping as the horse to change his luck.

"I am really looking forward to riding him," McEvoy said. "He is going to be a great ride in the race."

Trained by Peter Snowden, Retrieve was the Derby favourite until Rekindled Interest replaced him after winning Saturday's AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Rekindled Interest is $3.30 with TAB Sportsbet but Retrieve is the only other horse close to him in the market at $3.70.

McEvoy returned to race riding ahead of schedule last Wednesday at Canterbury after fracturing a vertebra in his back in a fall at Gosford on June 23.

In a brace for nine weeks and given no hope of riding at the Melbourne Cup Carnival, McEvoy said he had now got his strength back and he stripped at 53kg on Monday.

Since returning, the number one jockey for Darley has had 12 rides for two winners and five placegetters.

Retrieve is one of his four mounts on Derby Day. He will also ride stablemates Skilled, Beaded and Kidnapped.

McEvoy said winning the Derby would crown his comeback.

"It would top it off personally for me," McEvoy said.

"It is one of the greatest races for the year and I have run a few seconds in it.

"It looks as though Rekindled Interest is one of the main dangers after his win in the AAMI Vase but Retrieve is a nice ride for me."

"He is a really progressive three-year-old who has come through the ranks nicely for Peter (Snowden) and the Darley team.

"He won really well at Caulfield and ran a nice race (when second) in the Spring Champion."

"He's got a nice attitude to relax well and looks as though he stays well."

McEvoy has ridden in the Victoria Derby six times but not since he finished 10th on Husonic in 2007.

His three seconds in the classic were Hydrometer (2002), Kempinsky (2003) and Duelled (2005). He was also third on Teranaba in 2006.

"It would be nice to win this year and break the Derby nut," McEvoy said.

He said it would especially rewarding to do it on a Darley horse.

"I don't think Darley have had a Derby runner and it would be nice to win it with one of their first tries in the race," McEvoy said.

Amalfi (2001) was the last winner of Norman Robinson Stakes-Victoria Derby double.

Darley's other Derby runner is $21 chance Yulalona who was fourth in the Norman Robinson Stakes.
