Bart Cummings is reluctant to talk up the comeback of Viewed ahead of the release of Melbourne Cup weights on Wednesday.
But it's safe to say the handicapper was among those impressed by the defending titleholder's return in Saturday's Memsie Stakes (1400m) in which he finished an eye-catching fourth to Mic Mac.
Just behind Viewed was 2007 Cup winner Efficient who missed the race last year due to injury.
"I don't want to say too much about him in case the handicapper puts an extra kilo on," Cummings said.
The master trainer reckons Viewed should go up the equivalent amount Makybe Diva did when she was given 55.5 kilograms in 2004 after winning in 2003 with 4-1/2 less.
Viewed carried 53kg last year and on the Cummings' calculator should be given 57.5.
Efficient went up 3-1/2 kilos on his 2007 win for the 2008 Cup for which he was given 58kg.
"I don't think he should get any more than Makybe Diva did the second time," Cummings said.
"As long as he's thrown into the race the same as her I'll be happy.
"He might just go on to run in three Cups like her, it's something to aim at.
"And if he goes on to win three Cups like she did then we can give Makybe Diva a free service when Viewed goes to stud."
Efficient and Viewed have firmed in Melbourne Cup betting after the Memsie and share the second line with TAB Sportsbet at $14 with Irish mare Profound Beauty and dual Derby winner Rebel Raider each at $12.
Profound Beauty finished fifth in the Cup last year and has won all three starts she has had since with the Irish St Leger scheduled as her final lead-up race.
However, trainer Dermot Weld says the mare will not come to Australia unless he is happy she has been given a fair weight.
Weld is the only European trainer to win the Melbourne Cup, a feat he achieved with Vintage Crop in 1993 and repeated with Media Puzzle in 2002.
Cummings' Melbourne Cup record of 12 is more than double that of any other trainer with Lee Freedman and Etienne de Mestre on five apiece.
Included in Freedman's victories are Makybe Diva's last two while de Mestre trained Archer to win the first two Melbourne Cups in the 1860s.
