Top UK jockey Ryan Moore is to ride German stayer Protectionist in the Melbourne Cup.

The four-year-old colt has won his last two races in some style, with his cause in Australia aided by the likely appointment of the former champion jockey.

Wohler said: "Ryan Moore is set up to ride him in the Melbourne Cup."

Protectionist has been assigned 56.5 kilograms for the Flemington showpiece on November 4 and is due to arrive in Australia on Saturday.

Wohler told Sky Sports Radio in Australia: "He has improved from race to race, and hopefully he keeps on improving, which is the key for the big race in Melbourne.

"He doesn't mind (big fields). He travels very well and can go at any pace. Last time it was good to see (when he won at Deauville). He travelled well and still accelerated.

"If he takes the really travelling well then our plan is to have a run first in the Herbert Power at Caulfield."
