Aussie mare Ortensia flopped in the Haydock Sprint 1400m in the UK overnight but there was an excuse. Trainer Paul Messara says Ortensia suffered a nasty inch-long cut to her right fetlock during the race. Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate? Which race to tackle is the dilemma facing the connections of Southern Speed, who scored a narrow win over the luckless Manighar in the Grp 2 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington. Last year's Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed is in top nick and it was her fitness edge that helped her score. Co-trainer Leon Macdonald says: 'She's in the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate, but no decision will be made until after the Underwood - we know we can't really do both as it's so hard to come back from the Cup.'
