The John Moore-trained Straight Gold could be the horse to upset the apple cart for boom three-year-old Amber Sky in the Victoria Racing Club Trophy (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The day's trophy event might be thin on winning chances but is an exciting contest all the same, with Amber Sky (Matthew Chadwick) now getting to the point where he will meet some decent opposition after four comfortable wins from five starts up the straight.

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's three-year-old has looked good winning under light weights, and the trainer has done an excellent job of spacing the gelding's races, so that he is not over-exposed while still a young and growing horse.

Getting too far too soon in this environment without much age-restricted racing can be the undoing of a good young horse, and Yiu wisely dismissed any thoughts of trying to get Amber Sky to the international meeting.

Amber Sky is still not overly burdened with 123 pounds today, but he is up on what he has carried against older horses and finds himself giving weight to a couple of smart ones in Straight Gold (Neil Callan) and Go Baby Go (Tye Angland).

The barrier draw favours Amber Sky and there is no denying his ability but Waterloo is coming.

Going back 12 months, Straight Gold was in the kind of disadvantaged position referred to earlier - an inexperienced three-year-old, arriving off decent Australian juvenile form which threw him into Class Two right from the start.

Straight Gold overraced on debut at 1,200m, then managed to win his second start - his only run at this trip - in good style before the rest of his season saw him looking talented but making mistakes at the start which he couldn't overcome.
