SHOOT OUT'S owner Linda Huddy still can't believe Stathi Katsidis won't be riding her horse of a lifetime at Moonee Valley today, reports The Age.

It says: But, as she says, ''What can you do?'' The drama of Tuesday left the Mount Isa owner shaken, and she will ask Corey Brown to don a black armband when he rides Shoot Out in the Cox Plate. Huddy said things happened so quickly but she was haunted by how she found out about the death of Katsidis.

''Someone from one of the radio stations rang and said, 'Have you heard that Stathi is sick?''' she recalled. ''I wasn't worried because I thought he would right by Saturday. I rang John [Wallace, trainer] - he told me he probably said that because he didn't want to ride trackwork.

''John rang me back a couple of minutes later and told me. I was just shocked. It's too sad because he was always so full of life. We live in Mount Isa, and they live in Brisbane, so I didn't know him that well, but we went out a couple of times after the races. He was just like a normal guy. He loved [fiancee] Melissa, and from the outside he seemed to have everything; he was coming up to the races you want to ride in.'
