PACEMAKERS and their role in Australian racing will be one of the issues canvassed when the national chairmen of stewards' conference begins in Melbourne.

Racing Victoria chairman of stewards Terry Bailey said pacemakers "had been creeping into our racing in Victoria", reports the Melbourne Herald Sun.

It says: Bailey said he wanted to gather views from other states, but he thought it "unhealthy" for racing. He noted the use of a pacemaker in the race won by So You Think in Ireland last week. Pacemakers are allowed in Europe.

"I think it is something we need to look at," Bailey said.

Bailey said other items on the agenda included:

JOCKEYS' weight scale.

SAFETY items, including new jockey helmets and eye wear.

REVIEWING use of the whip and penalties.

POWER over unlicensed persons.
